Why Flossing with Braces Matters
Flossing while wearing braces is one of the most important habits you can maintain during
orthodontic treatment. Braces are an exciting step toward achieving a beautiful, confident smile,
but they also require extra attention to oral hygiene. Food particles and plaque can easily become
trapped around brackets, wires, and between teeth, making it easier for cavities and gum
inflammation to develop if proper care is not taken. While brushing removes much of the buildup
on the surfaces of your teeth, flossing reaches the tight spaces between teeth and under the
gumline that a toothbrush cannot reach. Maintaining a consistent flossing routine ensures that
when your braces come off, your smile is not only straight but also healthy and bright.
Preventing Cavities and Gum Problems
When plaque accumulates around braces, it can lead to swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath,
and even permanent white spots or cavities on the teeth. These white spots are areas where
enamel has weakened due to plaque buildup and can remain visible after braces are removed.
Daily flossing is one of the best ways to prevent these issues and protect your oral health
throughout treatment. Taking just a few extra minutes each day to floss can make a significant
difference in the final appearance of your smile and your overall dental health.
Helpful Tools for Easier Flossing
Flossing with braces may seem difficult at first, but with the right tools and practice, it becomes
much easier. Many patients find floss threaders helpful because they guide floss under the
orthodontic wire so it can reach between each tooth. Orthodontic floss, often called super floss,
has a stiffened end that slides easily beneath the wire and a spongy section designed to clean
around brackets. Water flossers are also a great addition, using a gentle stream of water to flush
out food and plaque around braces and along the gumline. While they do not completely replace
traditional flossing, they can make the process more comfortable and effective.
How to Floss Properly with Braces
To floss properly, begin by guiding floss under the main wire using a threader or super floss.
Gently slide the floss between each tooth, moving it up and down along the sides and slightly
under the gumline. Repeat this for every tooth and rinse afterward to remove any remaining
debris. Patients should floss at least once a day, ideally before bedtime, to remove the buildup
from the day and keep teeth and gums clean overnight.
